TOURNAMENT RULES:
THE TEAM
Teams will be made up of 4 or more players. Four(4) players will compete on a side; others will be available as substitutes. Substitutes may enter the game only during timeouts or in the case of injury.
THE GAME
The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them "OUT". This may be done by:
1. Hitting an opposing player with a LIVE thrown ball anywhere on their body.
2. Catching a LIVE ball thrown by your opponent before it touches the ground. (This will also result in the return of 1 teammate who was “OUT”.)
3. Balls can be blocked while holding another ball. If the player blocks a ball but then drops the ball they used to block with they are eliminated.
4. Blocked balls thrown by your opponent that deflect and make contact with you or a teammate before hitting the ground will result in you and/or your teammate being “OUT.”
5. Blocked balls thrown by your opponent that are caught before touching the ground by you or a teammate will result in an opponent being “OUT.” A LIVE ball can eliminate as many opponents as it touches without being caught and before hitting the ground.
Eliminated players must exit through the back boundary immediately and not interfere with any play by touching or grabbing any ball that is on the court or manipulating/blocking throwing lanes. They are to stay on their teams designated side line until a ball is caught by a teammate, permitting 1 player to return to the game. A returning player will have 10 seconds to re-enter the game. Players will re-enter the game in the order they were eliminated (first out, first back in).
Definition: LIVE: A ball that has been thrown and has not touched anything, including the floor/ground, an official or other items outside of the playing field (wall, ceiling, etc)
BOUNDARIES
During play, all players must remain within the boundary lines. Players may leave the boundaries through their end-line only to retrieve stray balls. They must also return through their end-line.
BREAKOUT
Game begins by placing the 6 dodge balls along the center line – Players then take a position behind their end line/start line (At least 1 hand of each player must be touching the wall and at least 1 foot of each player must be behind the end line/start line.) Following a signal by the official, teams may approach the center line to retrieve the balls. This signal officially starts the contest. Teams may retrieve as many balls as possible, and are permitted to step over the center line but NOT over the far line (third line) ONLY during breakouts. At any other time during the game, players are not permitted to step over the center line. Breaking either line rule will result in an “OUT.” Once a ball is retrieved it must be taken behind the attack-line (dashed line) before it can be legally thrown. At any other time during the game, players are permitted to throw a ball as far up as the center line.
TIMING AND WINNING A GAME
The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner. A 5-minute time limit has been established for each contest. If neither team has been eliminated at the end of the 5 minutes, the team with the greater number of players remaining will be declared the winner. If both teams have equal number of players each team will select one remaining player to compete in a 2 minute sudden death match.
TIME-OUTS & SUBSTITUTIONS
Each team will be allowed one (1) 30 second timeout per game. At this time a team may substitute players into the game.
5-SECOND VIOLATION
In order to reduce stalling, a violation will be called if a team with a higher body count controls all six (6) balls on their side of the court for more than 5 seconds. This also applies to tied teams. Maintaining control of all (6) balls on their side for more than 5 seconds will result in a mandatory surrender of three (3) out of the six (6) balls they are in possession of.
RULE ENFORCEMENT
During pool play or regular-season matches, rules will be enforced primarily by the "honor system"*. Players will be expected to rule whether or not a hit was legal or whether they were legally eliminated. All contests will be supervised by a court monitor*. The court monitor’s responsibility will be to rule on any situation in which teams cannot agree. THE COURT MONITOR’S DECISION IS FINAL – NO EXCEPTIONS.
