11 teams walked away with 5 trophies each; 3 teams won entrance into SKYBALL 6, the most anticipated 5 players event of 2003.  18 teams battled it out on the Paintball Arena full length tournament field.

Since this was a one day event, played on one field, on the day of the Superbowl, Paintball Arena had to cap registration at 18 teams.  Also to ensure that everyone got home early, games were set at a 4 minute time limit, and play offs were a sudden death format.   Other than that, rules conformed to Skyball standards.
Rookies only played each other, while novie and amateur teams played together in the prelims.  Novies and rookies moved on to their own play offs, while amatuer team final standings were determined by the prelims alone (only  3 amateur teams rendered play offs moot).

In the amateur division, scores were close between Crazy Paint and Rapid Fire, until Rapid Fire pulled ahead to a comfortable lead by the 5th game. Game 6 saw RF securing a sure victory and entrance into Skyball.  This team won the amateur division in Skyball 2001.  Is this a good omen for a repeat?

In the novice bracket, New Jersey teams Rapid Fire White and Juvenilles dominated the preliminaries.  NY Impalerz and Skullhead followed, moving on to the play offs.  Once past the prelim rounds, the rolls were reversed: Skullhead and Impalerz turned up the heat, won their first play-off games, and faced each other for the top spot.  When the paint hazed settled, the NY Impalerz won the title and the trip to Skyball.  Juveniles beat Rapid Fire White for 3rd place.

The rookie teams were the most numerous.  Many teams were playing their first tournament ever, and all put their hearts into it.  Mental Diversion, High Impact, and Rapid Fire Blue pulled ahead of the pack, all finishing the prelims within 37 points of each other.  The NY Raptors edged out Tantrik for the final play-offs spot.  The rookie finals saw Rapid Fire Blue winning their first game but losing the second in points.  Hot gun penalties for Mental Diversion put RF back on top, taking the Rookie win.  Finishing in  2nd place was Mental Diversion, High Impact took 3rd, and the Raptors finished 4th.

Zap Chronic event paint:  shot great.

Refs: The New York Dogs provided outstanding reffing, keeping on top of the games all day.  Very little down time between games gave refs just enough time to sweep the field as the next teams entered.  With only a brief break for lunch, the refs deserve applause.

As the day progressed, velocities crept up and some teams lost penalty points.  As a rule teams played stand-up paintball, and very few one-for-one calls had to be assessed.

Paintball Arena would like to thank ZAP PAINTBALL and the NEW YORK DOGS for their support in this event.  We hope to see everyone at our next tournament, the 2003 Spring 5-Man...
